Why don’t many people who live in northern Gran Canaria go to visit the southern beaches? It is because they don’t need to. They have places like El Puertillo in Gran Canaria.
El Puertillo is one of the many choices on the north coast of Gran Canaria the locals can go to relax and cool down.
El Puertillo natural pools
El Puertillo is a favourite for people who want something different than a regular beach. It has four-walled areas for swimming. In one of the pools, the water is shallow, so it is ideal for children.
There is also a promenade where you can sit or layout when not swimming. There should be space to lay out most days but El Puertillo can be busy on school holidays especially during the summer.
El Puertillo promenade and beach
The promenade at El Puertillo was constructed in 2011. It runs from the small town to just beyond the natural pools.
If you prefer a more traditional beach day, then this is also possible. El Puertillo beach in Gran Canaria is just a short 10 -minute walk from the Natural Pools. It is not a large beach, and it can get busy during the summer holidays. It is a black sand beach.
The town of El Puertillo is quite small, but there are some places to grab something to eat or drink.
Beyond El Puertillo
When you are in El Puertillo and have time, I would recommend exploring the area a bit more.
The promenade c
At the edge of El Puertillo, it is possible to continue walking along the coast. On this walk, there are many places to see.
There are also bus stops on the main road.
San Andres Gran Canaria
A short walk from El Puertillo is the small town of San Andres Gran Canaria. This area attracts a lot of surfers. There is also a town plaza here and a few bars and restaurants.
El Altillo Gran Canaria
Continuing down the north coast of Gran Canaria a short distance from El Puertillo is El Altillo. This small town is also a surfing area. Here you can also find a smaller natural sea pool. You will see very few tourists here. If the tide is in the sea covers the area. To get the best conditions for swimming check the tide times before you go here. To access this area go down a small laneway near the bar in the centre of the town.
Passing by El Altillo, there are some great sea views and houses. On many days Tenerife over 100km away can be seen.
El Roque Gran Canaria
Next up is the unique settlement of El Roque Gran Canaria. A collection of white houses face out alone against the Atlantic ocean. They can be few views anywhere that can compare to that people have from their windows here.
The views from El Roque are spectacular. You can feel the houses here daring the Atlantic. At the edge, there is a restaurant well known for its fish dishes.
Charco San Lorenzo
Less than 5km from El Puertillo is the natural sea pool of Charco San Lorenzo. As with all these pools if you want to swim checking the tide is advisable.
There are also options here to have something to eat and drink. A nice place for a visit for a snack or a beer is Cheringo cafe. It is the 4th picture below, and they do good local food at value prices.
The northern coast of Gran Canaria is well worth checking out if you are visiting the island. It is full of interesting small towns and places to swim and surf.
This area of Gran Canaria is accessible by car. There is a road that runs parallel to the coast. Many buses from Las Palmas also service this route. El Puertillo is just one of many places to relax on one of Gran Canaria many sunny days.
