Hi. It has been a while since I posted on this blog. I returned from my South American venture in February to my home town of Cork, Ireland. A month later, the whole world changed as COVID-19 hit Europe.
I suppose there are worst places to sit this out. Ireland is a very beautiful place. Even though the country was locked down, we could still go outside and take limited exercise.
Ireland is slowly and coming out of lockdown. As much as I loved South America, I would not have liked to be there during the lockdown. I still keep an eye on the news coming out of South America. My last stop Buenos Aires is still in a severe lockdown.
I do have unfinished business with South America. Brazil and Bolivia are top of my list for a visit. It will be a while. Brazil, for example, is one of the worst-hit countries with COVID-19. I think it will be a while before it is safe to visit Brazil again and I wish the country all the best. I met many Brazilians on my travels, and they were friendly people.
In the meantime, to keep busy, I have started a new project. One of my favourite places in the world is the Canary Islands. I lived in Gran Canaria for a while. As the Canary Islands are very dependent on tourism is has been very hard hit by the COVID-19 crisis.
I have launched a new website. It is tourism facts-based.
How many visitors are coming to the Islands v last year?. Who are they? Are prices up or down? Which is the best value island? What are the profiles of people visiting the islands? What island should you not go to if there is a nationality you do not like?
People might say this is the worse possible time to launch this venture. My thinking is with visitors down 95.6% in June 2020 it can only get better. I also want to tell the story of how the islands are trying to recover.
If you are a visitor to the Canary Islands the site may be of interest to you. If not stay safe and see you on my next trip.
