If you have never been to Playa Las Canteras Las Palmas let me give you my opinion straight off. Playa Las Canteras is the best city beach in the world. 3km of sandy beach. Restaurants, bars and of course the barrier. Let us take a walk on Playa Las Canteras.
Getting to Playa Las Canteras Las Palmas
If you are in the old town in Las Palmas the best bus to get is the 17. You can get this very regular bus outside San Telmo bus station. The last stop is for the beach.
Las Arenas Shopping Center.
If you need to stock up with anything before you hit the beach there is a big shopping centre in the south of the beach. This is called Las Arenas and it has all the usual brands and outlets.
Playa La Cicer
La Cicer is the first part of the beach we see as we make our way up Playa Las Canteras Las Palmas. This is a very popular area with young people and surfers. The beach is 3km long. For about 2km it has a natural barrier reef 200 meters from the shore. This gives an almost swimming pool effect as the barrier breaks the incoming waves.
The La Cicer area does not have a barrier. This is why La Cicer is the place to go for surfers. There are also places here where you can hire surfing equipment or take lessons.
The natural beach sand at the La Cicer is darker than the rest of the beach.
On the promenade side of the La Cicer there are also places of interest. First up on the right is the Alfredo Kraus auditorium.
At the La Cicer area, we come across the first of many places to eat and drink. This area of the beach also hosts live music on Saturday nights from 9 pm to 11 pm.
As we move up La Cicer you will notice the sand becoming more golden.
On the promenade, we pass some interesting places.
The Block is a very popular cafe here.
A popular bar we will pass is the NYC Taxi rock bar.
If the weather is not great you have the option of spending the day in the Gofit centre. The complex includes a large gym. Swimming pool and Spa. Day passes can be purchased.
PlayaLa Pena
We now turn the corner and we come to the La Pena area. This part of the beach is rockier. The best time to swim here is when the tide is out as you can see the rocks. Or when fully in as the rocks won’t be an issue. Because of the rocks, this is a great part of the beach for snorkelling. You will see all types of fish here.
The Surf Hostel on La Pena Playa Las Canteras
After La Pena, we come to the small Playa Chica on Las Canteras. This is a popular area for dining out.
Playa Grande Las Canteras
As we pass Playa Chica we come to the most popular part of the beach. Playa Grande. You will have passed many restaurants by now. Playa Grande is the area with the biggest selection of restaurants on Las Canteras. You can also hire sunbeds on this section of the beach. Playa Grande is almost rock free. It is also the place where people swim out to the barrier reef when the tide is out. The barrier is an amazing place for snorkelling.
Eat and drink Playa Grande Las Canteras
On Playa Grande, there are a few very popular places to eat and drink.
Casablanca is a popular Italian restaurant. They have a rooftop section where you can dine and enjoy the view.
Spanish bars tend to show only Spanish sports. If you are looking for other countries soccers games or live rugby then Paddy the Anchor Irish bar is the place for you.
Good food cheap. This is what Gran Playa restaurant is all about. If you are trying to find here just look for the restaurant with a line of people waiting to get a table.
Another popular place for cheap eating and drinking is the Spanish chain 100 Montaditos. They offer an extensive menu of snacks and are located near the end of Playa Grande Las Canteras.
We now come to the end of Playa Las Canteras and our 3km walk.
At the top of Playa Las Canteras, Las Palmas is La Puntilla. From here you can look back and see all the beauty of the beach.
Two other areas just a few minutes from Las Canteras maybe worth a visit.
Parque Santa Catalina
This is one of the main entertainment areas of Las Palmas. If there is a special event on it will more then likely be on here. To get here take one of the side streets up from Playa Chica.
El Mercado del Puerto
A great place to experience the best Tapas Las Palmas has to offer. It is on the main street just behind Las Canteras after you pass Gran Playa restaurant near the end of the beach.
